American Legion members are Veterans that help Veterans and our local communities. I can’t think of a better way to become active in your local community than to hold regular blood drives
Please use the links below to contact blood collection agencies. Each organization will have a different process and guidelines to get started but you have to make the first move. What are you waiting for, give them a call.
If you can’t find a blood donor organization in your area call any local hospital ask for the blood bank. Ask the blood bank manager where they get their blood products and ask for contact information. A committee is a must don’t try to do it by yourself.
Our district blood donor chairmen can also help you get the ball rolling. A list of them is on this page with full contact information. Call them with any questions. Piggyback your drive with another event such as a pancake breakfast, antique car show or a cookout. The most difficult drive you will do will be your first one. After that you will have a list of experienced donors to contact next time. Make up your own sign up sheet and put it at the registration table, ask for name, phone and email. The blood collection organization cannot share their info with you due to privacy laws. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days but most groups hold drives about every 90 days which is only four drives a year. Get your Auxiliary, SAL squadron and Legion Riders involved. Give all donors a reminder call before every blood drive.
Make your drive open to the public and have a membership table set up. Many veterans never join because nobody ever asked them. More active members are just an application form away. Many civilians have never set foot in an American Legion post and some have never heard of our great organization. Get and stay active in your local community.
TODAY IS A GREAT DAY TO GET STARTED, BE PROUD OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AND ALL THE GREAT THINGS WE DO.
